Rambling Jordanism

http://www.alarabiya.net/Articles/2006/09/25/27754.htm

Reading the previous piece of news disturbed me and made me wonder why Lebanese people seem to be that attached to their homeland.
Inspite of all the political and economical instability; a war every couple of years. And as much as they seem to be scattered all over the world they never miss a chance to go back home or at least show their hope to do that and start all over again.
I dont really blame loyal Canadians for being jealous over their country, I just "envy" Lebanon for having whatever Jordan does not have.

Call me too optimistic but I think that Jordan has a great potential that might be the best in the middle east. and apparently the progression that Jordan has shown in the past ten years or so is much more than expected.
I know how frustrating it can get especially when no one is being advantaged by all that "multi billion" projects and investments (at least until now). But...well..at least the opportunity is here at our doorstep.

In the past year I have more than 6 friends who left the country. Well, one of them has already come back (way to go beesan!) the others "might" come back in a couple of years.
I know many others who are either applying for immigration or waiting for their papers or just dreaming about it.
Why do all the openminded, talented and intellectual people seem to be leaving?! and why do they never seem to be planning for a comeback?!

I just feel that in few years I'll be the only one staying in Jordan with no one left but fanatics and Iraqis (not that I have any problem with Iraqis but they are the only ones who seem to be coming to Jordan not leaving it).

I'm afraid that someday I'll wake up to find my self in a "small home in Canada" whose "roof is covered with snow" that Fairouz sings for and then suddenly run to the internet and quickly erase this post in shame.

That's so true, but the question is: do money, buildings & investments build the right morals, ethics and honesty? the answer is NO. IMO, Jordan needs a lot of time to become a country that has a loyal people, frustrating is always there because wherever you go you find a lot of liar people, a government that never help or support, and a failed system that keeps no rights for you or for your life.

I feel sorry when I say that, I live here and I love Amman, but I never felt that Amman deserves me for an example, people must change! the only reason that I'm still here is family, friends and that little hope that I can give and help others. and when I find that someone knows " bayt esgheer be Canada " that makes me so happy Kaman ;-)

aha, one more thing "Lebanese people seem to be that attached to their homeland" Unfortunately, that's not so true, I lived with a lot of Lebanese, and I saw a lot of bad cases, believe me they're just like us, lots of immigrations and tafashan, unbelievable economical situation and horrible social problems, we're only a apart of the arab world that has the same stuff! Lebanese are only different in their way in dealing with life and happiness!

My parents are Jordanian, and are preparing to move the family there in a couple of years, i'm 16 and have never been there. But I know what you mean, none of our relatives here in the US want to go back, they look at our family like we're crazy.
I, personally, am looking forward to coming to Jordan.
By the way, i'm a Haddad too.

lNH
welcome back in advance :D
it's always great to know that someone is coming back

but i have to clarify something here...I'm not saying that everyone MUST go back to where he's originally from or where his ancestors are from (unless he felt like doing it of course)
but I'm talking about the immigrating youth who are leaving their countries nowadays.
I believe that a person must have a loyalty toward the place that he was born and raised in.

I understand that not everyone has to go back, but loyalty is very important.
I had a fallout with some of my cousins and friends from church because after 9/11 they pulled the whole "i'm not Jordanian, I'm Italian" thing. You can't turn your back on your heritage like that.

I started out planning to go back to Jordan.

Now, I'm not so sure, and this is the first time I say it.

Why do smart people leave? Because they don't want to burry their potential under piles of corruption, old traditions, and tribal mindsets.

Every day in the US I see an example of maximized potential. A news anchor looking the camera straight in the eye and saying "Mr. President, you have disgraced your position". I asked myself the question "right or wrong, look what this guy have become. Look at this personality, what would have happened if this man grew up in Jordan as a little boy?" You know he has the potential, but I doubt you and I will disagree he will not grow up to be the same big personality that he is today.

Look at the recent YouTube acquisition. Do you think three new college graduates would be able to have this kind of success anywhere in the Arab world? Unfortunately not.

This is what people run away from. They want to live, and most of all, they want to realize their potential, and unfortunately, our country is only good in burrying it, and sometimes it seems its goal is to even kill it.

Sad, but true my friend.

I believe Hamzeh put it eloquently...however, anyone who lacks drive, motivation and commitment will not succeed no matter what opportunities present themselves nor which country he's in.

I doubt that those three young men had this master entrepreneurial plan that took years of making. a vision along with motivation and creativity that was launched out of a garage transpired into YouTube...and pure luck would have it, a giant company saw the potential this small 'start up' has and decided to acquire it! that garage didn't necessarily have to be in Menlo Park...it could've very well have been in Irbid...

For those who realize that their potential lies elsewhere, go for it...accomplish your goals, build your life and make sure to, one way or another, give back to your country ...in the process cleaning up these piles of corruption and old traditions so that future generations will grow up not having to go far looking for opportunities and seeking 'maximized potential.'

I can't agree more with Mohammad and Hamzeh. Iman is a bit optemistic.

It's not about the loyalty to the country, we all love Jordan... or at least I know I do, and I'm proud as well. But I can't be proud of the negatives in the culture, the lies, the was6a, the discriminations, the the the. I might add to my country when things are pretty positive, and when I am not facing any of the known society/ governmental/ cultural bring downs. It's not always easy to bare with corruption, or to accept living like you're not an important asset to your country. These things make many of us run away to lands that show you your worth, and make you appreciate it.

I do agree with all what u said...I'm not saying that Jordan is a utopia..we do have all the BS u mentioned but at the same time -and i know it sounds cheesy- but instead of cursing darkness u shuould lisht a candle. u cant complain corruption and tribalism and "wasta" without trying to fight them.

I think leaving or just thinking to leave someday is way easier than fighting a whole community under the government we have, thats why it's more chosen...

First i wuold say that the comment about Saddam under the name Anonymous is mine...

I think people start hidding off Jordan because of lake of money and so....they go for example to the golf, America or Euorope to generate money..and money you know it make people forget about themselves.... :-(

the second reason i think that genious people need more technological countries to make thier dreams come true...yes Jordan have made alot of Developments they are not Enough...tell me if a man had studied 4 example Genetic Engineering..can u give him a good enployment in his/her field..i think the answer is no, and there is more and more fields like this

i wanna say that there is a lot of our brothres outside who have the feeling of Homesickness
